At WSP we have a strong track record assisting organisations with sustainability reporting. We have substantial experience of writing reports (in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) where applicable), collating data, undertaking peer reviews and providing assurance services (in line with AA1000-AS).
We encourage clients to communicate in a way that is relevant and material to their intended audience. Delivering information clearly, honestly and positively on performance, practices and commitments. This approach is fundamental to building trust among stakeholders.
Reports should be informed by engaging both internal and external stakeholders in the process. Indeed, sustainability reporting can greatly support buy-in to sustainability policies and programmes. We monitor surveys of sustainability reports, including the ACCA awards and Corporate Register, and the evolution of reporting standards, so we can advise you on what constitutes ‘best practice’.
The structure of our approach is:
- Project initiation – scope the project, agree timescales, responsibilities etc.
- Develop KPIs – agree baseline reporting indicators relevant to your business
- Identify relevant information – case studies that illustrate your commitment to energy efficiency, or charity etc.
- Structure the report – we will agree the messages with you and advise on best practice and international guidelines such as GRI
- Design and print – we can project manage this process for you
We can help facilitate internal and external stakeholder engagement workshops. These are integral to developing the KPIs and core issues for the reporting process. We use a materiality assessment tool and scoring system to analyse results and inform final drafts of the report.
If we have not assisted in developing the report, or have not provided any other sustainability services, we can provide ‘assurance’ of sustainability reporting.
This can take a number of forms. Our emphasis is on using the highest standards (in line with AA1000 – AS), but taking a pragmatic approach to helping companies validate their performance and identify opportunities for improving sustainability performance. As well as an external assurance statement, we always provide an internal management report offering advice and more detailed recommendations.
The Co-operative Group
We have enjoyed a long relationship with The Cooperative Group, one of the largest consumer co-operatives in the world. We have supported their EMS implementation in their Dairies, Farming and Funeral Care businesses; we have collated information for their annual sustainability report; and we have helped them embed their sustainable purchasing process through a training module for their purchasing teams.
