‘Take time 4 safety’ programme for TenixToll Defence Logistics

TenixToll Defence Logistics (TTDL), an incorporated joint venture in Australia, was awarded a contract by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to provide warehousing, maintenance and distribution services under the Defence Integrated Distribution System.

The transition of the contract involved many existing staff handling these activities at 23 sites in all states and territories of Australia.

The team inherited by TTDL had a track record for a high level of lost time due to injury and a negative perception to management's willingness to tackle occupational, health and safety issues.  TTDL engaged our risk specialists in Australia to drive behavioural and attitudinal change towards safety amongst these new staff.

We designed a national programme for TTDL called 'Take Time 4 Safety'.  We worked with a small group of employees to understand how to identify workplace risks and what they could do to make the environment safer.  Front-line managers received coaching to empower them to proactively identify issues to be solved.

TTDL recognised significant behavioural change in attitudes to acceptable safe practice.  The frequency rate for lost time to injuries fell from 50 to 9 over a 12 month period, and there was a sharp increase in hazard identification and solution implementation.
