Our approach

WSP is a specialist in managing sustainability. It is what we do day in and day out. So it is something that runs through the core of our business.

We invest heavily in managing our own direct impacts, and our interactions with communities and charities. But our biggest opportunity to mitigate environmental damage and improve the future sustainability of our planet is through our clients and the advice we give to them. And this forms the cornerstone of our approach.

We manage sustainability and responsibility in four distinct ways:

We strive to maintain our position as a world leading sustainability consultant

We innovate to find new and better approaches to improving sustainability. And we are at the forefront of emerging issues to ensure we can advise our clients quickly, and across every aspect of their business.

We integrate the very best sustainability advice into our clients' work

We couple sustainability with commerciality. And we apply our expertise to our clients' work to ensure they maximise their sustainability initiatives. In one UK project we diverted 917,411 tonnes of waste from landfill. That would fill just under 46,000 typical tipper trucks. And in South Africa a biogas project will produce 33,000 certified emissions reductions every year, that's equivalent to the carbon footprint of 3,000 UK consumers.

We have a Committee and Framework to manage our own impacts

We apply all of the best practice you would expect. We have green travel plans, video-conferencing, recycling etc. But we go further. One example includes being the first UK company to launch a Personal Carbon Tracking scheme for our staff.

We support the wider community

Our staff volunteer with many organisations. We run a programme to develop environmental policies and strategies for charities. And we have regularly run a community uplift programme in South Africa.

We also closely collaborate in the UK with Business in the Community (BITC), a network that actively encourages companies to join and commit to play a positive role in reducing carbon emissions and offers support, advice and a roadmap for a 'journey' to lower emissions - as detailed on their website.
