Profile on Carl Haycock, MD of our South African business

In February 2009, WSP was delighted to announce the internal promotion of Carl Haycock to Managing Director of our WSP Environmental (Pty) Ltd business in South Africa.

Carl joined WSP in 2002 and has been a key figure in both the development of our office in Durban and our delivery capability in contaminated land work.  As part of the leadership team for our business in South Africa, he has more recently held the position of Chief Operating Officer.  He plays an active role in our business development activities in the region and works with colleagues from across the world to help several of our multi-national clients who have interests in South Africa.  In his new role Carl is based in Johannesburg.

Carl speaks about our business in the region:

"There is enormous potential for our Environment & Energy business in Southern Africa and we aim to grow and diversify in terms of service lines and sectors.

Clients are telling us they need advice on issues such as waste management, climate change, energy management and sustainability.  This is in addition to areas we have traditionally supported around impact assessments, environmental management plans, contaminated land work etc.

We work closely with our engineering and transportation colleagues in WSP Group Africa, and our future opportunities will be enhanced by our announcement in December 2008 of the investment we have attracted from the Black Empowerment Consortium, Intsaki.

It's an exciting time for our business in Africa and I hope we will continue to delight our clients and deliver excellent work."
