Think serious injuries not papercuts
Questions vs. rules. Genevieve Hawkins from WSP, key note speaker at the New Zealand Annual Safeguard conference.
Genevieve was invited by the New Zealand government to speak at their annual safety conference on the 1st of June. Genevieve challenged the audience about the way that safety practitioners are misguiding organisations in the way they manage safety. Genevieve says; 'we need to get back to basics. We need to stop thinking about safety in a compliance framework and get people to focus on the real significant issues in the workplace. Stop talking about paper cuts and start talking about what can seriously injure people'.
The presentation focused around how we engage people in conversations continually across the organisation to more effectively solve problems in the workplace. Here is some of the feedback given on Genevieve's presentation.
- Excellent ideas. Very practical examples from a clearly wise and widely experienced practitioner
- Very good presentation - thought provoking, reminder to challenge behaviours we accept
- Wonderful thoughts about engaging people and getting results
- Best presentation of the day for me with useful ways to maintain safety in the workplace with emphasis on engaging people
- Excellent speaker - very relevant, funny and interesting
