Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development & Climate - Review of Flagship Projects

Strategic Input to Leading Clean Technology Initiative

In late 2009, WSP Environmental lead a consortium including Cleantech AustralAsia (CTA) and Baker & McKenzie lawyers on a Department of Resources, Energy & Tourism project to undertake a strategic review of 20 clean technology projects for the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP).

The APP aims to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy technologies in the Asia Pacific region, and brings together seven leading developed and developing nations in collaboration to address climate change, energy security and air pollution challenges to encourage economic development and reduces poverty.

The review examined the progress, results, and effectiveness of APP's current flagship portfolio of cutting edge clean technology projects that are developing low carbon electricity generation. The project was very significant politically for the governments of the countries involved. The analysis provided both quantitative and qualitative measures of each project, and provided detailed recommendations to the APP Policy and Implementation Committee (PIC) on opportunities to improve the success of the APP.

Results were presented at the joint Ministerial and PIC meeting in October 2009 in China. Peter Castellas from CTA and WSP’s Mike Atkinson presented the report and findings to the PIC meeting and lead a detailed discussion. The report was adopted and presented to the Ministerial meeting. The review will form the basis for further discussion on the future direction and structure of the APP.
