At WSP we recognise that contaminated land carries uncertainty, financial risk and potentially significant liability for all stakeholders involved in the management, sale or development of a site. We offer a long history in Europe helping clients to minimise these risks through our specialist land remediation company, WSP Remediation.

This business provides guaranteed solutions for the remediation of contaminated land and groundwater pollution, and the management of associated risks. Our experience covers all types of sites including, chemical, gas and steel works, power stations, military facilities, former manufacturing plants, waste tips, rail depots and oil refineries.

We deliver sustainable remediation solutions that successfully release value from industrial and brownfield land, facilitate development, manage liability and uncertainty and exceed our clients expectations.

Our approach

We apply sustainable and innovative approaches to on-site treatment technologies, often in challenging and difficult conditions, minimising disruption, transportation requirements and enabling activity to be tailored and focused on key affected areas.

In summary we offer:

·          Design of remediation solutions, using laboratory and field-based pilot studies to optimise the performance of our remediation systems.

Environmental Liability Solutions

In-conjunction with our specialist remediation capability, WSP also offers clients a range of innovative solutions to manage and remove financial risk and uncertainty from contaminated sites. Our Environmental Liability Solutions provide long term indemnity protection against known and unknown pollution conditions, addressing the specific risks that present an unacceptable level of exposure to our clients.

Our solutions

We offer:

·          Strategic Consultancy:We apply financial modelling techniques to quantify environmental risk in respect of time and cost, and how to best minimise the risk.

·          Insurance: WSP can facilitate environmental insurance protection at sites that don't require immediate remediation.

·          Remediation Plus: WSP provides guaranteed fixed price remediation for contaminated sites. This removes the uncertainty of cost for clients where the full extent of contamination is not known. WSP provides a warranty for the remediation and a long term insurance-backed indemnity against specified liabilities.

·          Active Transfer: Suitable for major brownfield sites, this is a complete transfer of environmental liability from the client to WSP for an agreed one-off payment, with the client retaining control and ownership of the asset.

These market leading Solutions help to facilitate business transactions by removing complexities caused by contamination; they also enhance land value and protect against unforeseen remediation costs.

Environmental Impact Assessments

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a key element in the successful completion of the planning process to enable new development. The EIA identifies and assesses the potential environmental effects of proposed changes to land use. Our team has extensive experience in preparing full EIAs and specialist component studies, regularly working with colleagues across WSP and other technical advisers appointed by our clients.

Depending on our clients needs, we can deliver scoping studies, alternative option studies, pre and post construction monitoring plans and manage public consultations and representation at planning inquiries.

Energy & Sustainability Auditing

WSP has a long and impressive track record advising clients worldwide on all aspects of energy efficiency, the application of renewable technologies, responses to climate change and management of emissions.

Businesses in Poland are increasingly aware of the value of conducting energy and emissions audits to identify opportunities to make improvements to their operations, both from a cost benefit perspective and to meet regulatory guidelines.

Our approach

Our audits deliver technically practical and financially robust improvement measures; they:

·          Review equipment and management processes

·          Check equipment is installed and controlled for optimum use

·          Identify where technology has been superseded with more efficient designs

·          Identify where energy use is not being monitored and managed

An effective management system will in turn help deliver improvements in energy consumption and emissions performance. We work with many clients to develop management systems, and our input includes:

·          Implementing feedback and applying effective change management techniques

·          Introducing new measurement, reporting and targeting techniques to the appropriate people

·          Delivering effective training and communication programmes to ensure improvements are made

Compliance with REACH Legislation

WSP Environment & Energy assists many clients in complying with national and EU environmental related legislation; auditing processes and helping them achieve regulated permits. Helping organisations comply with REACH, the new EU chemicals legislation is an example of this type of activity. REACH is widely regarded as the most complex piece of environmental legislation introduced to date. It stands for, Registration, Evaluation,Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals and will have a wide ranging impact on all companies using or processing chemicals and the manufacturers of goods as diverse as clothing and stationery products. The legislation came into force on 1 June 2007. All chemicals manufactured or imported into Europe over one tonne per annum will need to be registered by manufacturers and / or importers. If a substance is not registered it will be unlawful to manufacture or import it into the European Union.
