Our capability in wind power

Wind power is a natural part of energy production in a sustainable society.  In Sweden, WSP has expertise of every aspect of a windpower project, including planning, micro and macro-siting, the permit process, construction and commissioning.

With our experienced project managers to draw all the aspects of such a significant project together, WSP has a very successful track record in wind power-projects for our customers and the environment.

WSP and wind power projects

The project teams we draw together at WSP will cover all key aspects of establishing a wind farm.  We will consider transport, power distribution and construction issues and we will help you assess the best places to locate wind turbines.

WSP plans and optimises wind-farm layouts for the maximum possible energy production and the minimum possible effect on the surroundings.  The tools we use are tried and tested applications and methods that have been approved by the wind-power industry.

Some of the skills we bring to a wind-power project include:

  • The preparation of an environmental impact assessment and permit applications.

  • Use of virtual reality techniques to prepare realistic visualisations (3D models, illustrations, films etc.) of the way the landscape will be affected by wind turbines. This is important as wind power's biggest effects on the environment are its visual effect and the noise created.

  • Our Acousticians will advice on the noise impacts.

  • During planning we can contribute on a range of issues. We'll advise on the infrastructure required to site the turbines, in terms of foundations and also the road and transport infrastructure issues. We will also help with the design of the internal gridnet and the connection to the external gridnet.

  • WSP can take responsibility for construction management, preparation of enquiry data etc.

  • We help calculate the likely energy production from a site which enables operators to determine their income flow. We analyse wind data from measurements taken across a site using wind units placed on the site. It is advisable that this process takes a year as it will provide more accurate calculations than using publicly available weather and wind information.

WSP is certified by Det Norske Veritas in accordance with the quality standard ISO 9001 and the environmental management standard ISO 14001.

Our track record

Vattenfall Vindkraft AB 2008

For Vattenfall, WSP is commissioned with taking an overall approach regarding establishment of wind power.  This includes, project management, WindPRO, the permit process, geo-technology and planning of electrical networks and roads.

Stena Renewable AB 2008

WSP is assigned with handling Stena's permit process to establish wind power, including EIA.

Municipal Wind-Power Policies 2007, 2008

WSP draws up wind-power policies in collaboration with the municipalities of Falköping, Karlskrona/Torsås, Oskarshamn and Varberg.

Investigation for the Swedish Energy Agency, 2004

WSP examined the problem factors regarding expansion of wind power and bioenergy.  The examination included the planning process, technical development and accessibility.  A number of existing wind farms in Europe were also studied in detail as part of the project.

Kriegers Flak, 2002

WSP provided the description of environmental consequences, including an EIA for a 128-turbine ocean-based wind farm with a capacity of 5 MW per turbine.
