New framework for brownfield divestment in Europe | 24th May 2011

The Brownfield Working Group of NICOLE (the leading forum on contaminated land management in Europe) has produced a Framework Document for brownfield divestment in Europe. It is designed to inform industrial land holders of options to secure as clean an exit from liability as possible, and meet their liability management goals.

The Group is led by Ian Heasman of Taylor Wimpey and includes active members from industry, and service providers including WSP and Eco-Bos. WSP participated in this project from the outset and co-authored a number of the key outputs, adding our unique perspective and experiences on liability transfer having recently completed the first environmental liability transfer outside of the USA at a former Kodak chemical site in Liverpool, UK.

Two final outputs from the project were launched at the NICOLE workshop on Operating windows for site characterisation, held on 25-27 May 2011 in Copenhagen, with Sarah MacKay of WSP chairing a session on Advanced Diagnostics and Data Interpretation on Day 2 of the conference.

Further details on the project and the reports can be found on the NICOLE website, with more information about liability transfer and the first of its kind in Europe at the WSP website.
