Robert Carr appointed as Director of Sustainability & Energy in the Middle East | 2nd Apr 2012

WSP Environment & Energy (WSP) is delighted to announce the appointment of Robert Carr as Director, Sustainability & Energy, in its Middle East, India and Northern Africa business. Robert brings 25 years of experience in sustainability management, specialising in property, infrastructure and urban development.

Based in Dubai, Robert joins from Buro Happold where he was Head of the Environment & Sustainability team within their strategic management consulting business, assessing city-level challenges with respect to the sustainability agenda.

Robert specialises in Strategic Environmental and Sustainability Management, focusing on organisational, project and urban sectors.  Robert has worked across a broad spectrum of sustainability challenges, from the development of project sustainability strategy and processes to delivering sustainable resource management and contributing to institutional and regulatory analysis of sustainability governance.

In previous roles working for Scott Wilson and as an independent sustainability consultant, Robert has gained experience working across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and elsewhere in the world including Europe, Russia and South East Asia.

Speaking on this appointment, Kent Pedersen, WSP E&E's Managing Director, Middle East, India and Northern Africa said: "We are delighted to welcome Robert to our business. He has a very strong international track record and a great deal of experience across the Middle East, in particular in Saudi Arabia, where we have recently established a permanent presence. Robert's expertise in sustainability management and appraisal in the built environment means we have a strong team in place to offer our clients in this region an outstanding service in these areas."

Commenting on his new role Robert said: "It is exciting to join a team of WSP's size which has a large and well established environmental and sustainability practice in the Middle East. My experience in the Middle East suggests that parts of the region are primed for significant development in both organisational sustainability and urban sustainability strategies.  Much of the work that lies ahead must incorporate a significant element of refining and augmenting existing practices and developing innovative and culturally appropriate ways of delivering the region's sustainability goals.

Over the course of my career I have worked with the World Bank on sustainable urban energy planning and advised major financial institutions on their sustainability, carbon and environmental management programmes.  I intend to apply this knowledge and experience to WSP's clients as we listen to their challenges and help them shape sustainable strategies for the future."

Robert is a Full Member of IEMA and an IEMA Registered Auditor, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has a MSc. in Environmental Assessment & Management and a First Class BA (Hons) in Environmental Policy & Management.
