Senior waste specialist joins WSP | 8th Nov 2010

WSP Environment & Energy is pleased to announce that Dr Kevin Whiting, formerly Technical Director of Juniper Consultancy Services, has joined the company as a Senior Technical Director. Kevin has more than 25 years experience in the field of waste and resource management and is specifically recognised worldwide as an expert in combustion, gasification and pyrolysis of wastes and biomass.

Commenting on this strategic hire, WSP Environment & Energys UK Managing Director, Brad Blundell said: "We are delighted to welcome Kevin to our business.  He will bring significant expertise and experience in an area of the waste sector that we intend to grow.  His past record is exemplary and he is already known to many decision makers in key companies involved in the sector."

Kevin has worked for the more than 15 years as an independent consultant in the waste management and renewable energy sectors. He has conducted many technical due diligence reviews, feasibility studies and techno-economic assessments of conventional and novel technologies for the conversion of wastes and biomass fuels into energy.  These projects have been delivered to both private and public sector clients, including banks, venture capital and investment companies, project developers and waste management companies.

Kevin has written many technical papers and presented globally on the subject of energy-from-waste and the conversion of resources into energy.  He represented the UK on the Program Committee of the IT3 Conference held annually in the USA and participated by giving several plenary lectures and presenting advanced tutorials on waste gasification.  He has also lectured extensively at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and Southampton and was the lead technical author of the Juniper report "Pyrolysis & Gasification of Waste: A Worldwide Technology & Business Review", (1st Edition - 2000, 2nd Edition 2001).

Speaking on his appointment, Kevin said: "I am excited by the challenge of growing WSP's business in technical and technology consulting in combination with the company's existing recognised strengths in the delivery of major infrastructure schemes, process engineering and environmental permitting and planning.  Technology selection is extremely important in the waste sector and to secure project finance the technology of choice must be fully bankable."

Kevin obtained B.Eng and PhD degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Bradford, is a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) and Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
