UK ROC banding review - changes for EfW and AD facilities | 26th Jul 2012

Government support for energy from waste technologies has finally been confirmed (25th July). The outcomes make for interesting reading, particularly for gasification and pyrolysis systems for which there will now be a single ACT band (with no requirement to measure the syngas CV to differentiate between 'standard' and 'advanced' as is the case at present).

Whereas the original plan in the consultation was to halve the support for ACT, the final outcome is that it has actually stayed the same or, for some technologies, significantly increased (e.g. for 'standard' gasification, the support has doubled from 1 to 2 ROCs per MWh).

It has also been proposed that Anaerobic Digestion (AD) installations up to 5 MW that are accredited under the RO before 1 April 2013 would be allowed to remain in the RO, but any new systems up to 5 MW accredited after that date will no longer be able to claim ROCs. The feed-in tariff will provide support at this level instead. This will now be subject to consultation.
