US Department of Transportation HQ wins prestigious Phoenix Award | 18th Nov 2009
WSP Environment & Energy is proud to announce that the US Department of Transportation (DOT) Headquarters project in Washington D.C. is a winner of the Phoenix Award for 2008 (US EPA Region 3). Running since 1997, the Phoenix Awards are widely recognized as the premier award of excellence in brownfield redevelopment and revitalization.
This prestigious award not only honors excellence in brownfield redevelopment but it is given to those who have worked to solve critical environmental and community challenges when transforming formerly used real estate into productive new uses. This winning project demonstrates how creative public-private partnerships can transform underutilized federal properties into productive and vibrant communities.
Throughout this award winning project, WSP worked closely with the General Services Administration (GSA), JBG Companies (a DC-based developer), Clark Construction (the general contractor) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to redevelop a former gun barrel manufacturing facility operated by the U.S. Navy into a new headquarters for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). WSP investigated, developed, and implemented an innovative remediation plan for the 11-acre site which is part of the Southeast Federal Center (SEFC), along the Anacostia River in Washington D.C.
The new 1.9 million square foot DOT Headquarters buildings now houses 5,500 employees. The buildings and surrounding plazas have helped to create a neighborhood for residents, workers and visitors, and have begun to restore a community connection to the Anacostia River. The 44 remaining acres of the SEFC are now being transformed into a mixed-used waterfront development that includes commercial, retail and cultural space, residential buildings and open spaces including a first-class 5-acre public waterfront park.
The Phoenix Award Executive Committee announced The Phoenix Award winners for 2008 and 2009 at an awards ceremony during Brownfields 2009 in New Orleans earlier this week. During the environmental conference with a crowd of approximately 5,000 participants, the Phoenix Award winners showcased their projects with case study presentations and exhibit information.
