World Bank energy efficient cities project in Jordan awarded to WSP | 12th Aug 2010

WSP has been appointed by the World Bank to develop an Energy Efficient Urban Transport Plan for Zarqa City Downtown Area in Jordan.

This is our first appointment by the World Bank to its Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) in the Middle East. In 2008 ESMAP launched the Energy Efficient Cities Initiative (EECI) to promote energy-efficient programs and planning in the cities of developing countries. Experts from WSP's Development & Transportation, and Environment & Energy teams, with Consolidated Consultants of Jordan, have been awarded this EECI project to look into developing an energy efficient transport strategy for Zarqa Municipality in Jordan.

About Zarqa City
Zarqa is the second most densely populated and urbanized city in Jordan, located close to the country's capital, Amman. Jordan's growth stems largely from the economic activity within the Amman and Zarqa urban conurbation, and virtually all industries are located along a corridor between Amman and Zarqa. The economic dynamics between the two cities generates high transport demand, with most of Zarqa's population working and studying in Amman. This gives rise to heavy traffic along the Amman-Zarqa corridor with over 150,000 vehicles per day on the 30 kilometre highway.

What we will be delivering
WSP's role will be to address the following major objectives to improve traffic mobility and reduce energy emissions:

  • Develop an energy efficient mobility plan for downtown Zarqa
  • Control and reduce energy consumption and reduce pollutant and greenhouse gases related to the transport of passengers and goods
  • Develop a plan for efficient and easy access to the proposed Amman - Zarqa light rail terminal using bus public transport
  • Develop a realistic phased programme of investment over the short and long term time horizon

Work begins on the project on 20th September.

Other exciting projects we're working on in Jordan
