WSP helps clients to road-test new standards under the GHG Protocol Initiative | 16th Feb 2010
On January 20th the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) kicked off a trial period for two newly released standards under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Initiative.
As part of the trial, sixty organizations from 17 nations have begun a road-testing period to test out the 'Product Life Cycle' and 'Scope 3' standards. These two standards provide guidance to companies in quantifying and reporting GHG emissions in a product's life and including Scope 3 emissions sources in their corporate GHG inventories. They aim to help companies to assess the emissions intensity of processes upstream and downstream from their operations.
WSP Environment & Energy is pleased that a number of its current clients are participating in the road testing of these two standards. Currently, WSP is working with Gold'n Plump Poultry to develop a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) for 10 of its packaged chicken products sold in retail stores. The study will characterize the impacts on climate change, resource depletion, human health and ecosystem quality resulting from the production and consumption of its products. As a participant in the WRI road test, Gold'n Plump will submit a life cycle GHG inventory for one of the packaged products in its Just Bare Chicken brand line, and provide WRI with feedback ensuring that these standards are practical and offer value in a business context.
