WSP hold risk assessment workshops in America | 14th Apr 2009
WSP Environment & Energy, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) and Michael Baker Jr. Inc, recently held a series of workshops in North America. The workshops were part of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Land Recycling Program for remediation of sites under the Land Recycling Act (Act 2).
Tom Biksey, Director of Risk Assessment at WSP, was the instructor for the 2-day workshops on Human Health Risk Assessment and Ecological Risk Assessment. The workshops were aimed at professionals, including engineers, geologists and environmental managers, who manage or perform site characterizations and risk assessments. In his sessions, Tom discussed tools and technical skills to enable participants to better understand and conduct human health and ecological risk assessments in their work.
The workshops, held in Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, enabled participants to ask questions and discuss what their specific successes and challenges were on risk assessments and related projects. The Department of Environmental Protection's risk assessors were present to discuss and clarify the Department's policies and guidance when grey areas existed.
After the last workshop in Pittsburgh, Tom was invited to become a member of the Cleanup Standards Scientific Advisory Board. The Cleanup Standards Scientific Advisory Board assists the Department of Environmental Protection in developing cleanup standards and identifying appropriate statistical and scientific procedures.
