WSP’s continued support for the US EPA’s Climate Leaders Program | 18th Dec 2009
WSP Environment & Energy's team works as a contractor to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) providing technical assistance to their Climate Leaders Program. The Climate Leaders Program is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. The EPA estimates that the GHG reductions by Climate Leaders Partners will prevent more than 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, which is equal to the annual emissions of more than 9 million cars.
Partner companies in the Program commit to reducing their impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on a quality management system, setting aggressive reduction goals and annually reporting their progress to EPA. Through program participation, companies create a credible record of their accomplishments and receive EPA recognition as corporate environmental leaders.
Members of WSP Environment & Energy's team have provided technical assistance to the Climate Leaders program since 2002. WSP is currently assisting over 80 Climate Leaders Partner companies to develop comprehensive GHG inventories and Inventory Management Plans and to complete Climate Leaders reporting requirements.
WSP has also provided technical input on Climate Leaders guidance documents and was the lead author in the Climate Leaders "green power guidance". Additionally, our team regularly provides other general technical assistance to the program, including answering technical questions and providing program management and reporting suggestions.
WSP's technical assistance has helped Climate Leaders Partner companies to successfully implement GHG management systems in their organizations, and to set and achieve aggressive GHG reduction goals. It has also helped the Program to grow to be the country's largest GHG goal-setting program.
Since it was launched 7 years ago, the program has expanded from 11 charter members to 285 companies that represent more than 8% of total annual U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Program partners represent a broad range of industry sectors and companies with combined annual revenue equal to 12% of the U.S. gross domestic product.
