Here is a small selection of some of the projects that this part of our business has undertaken around the world.
Advising EPA Climate Leaders Program in US
In the US we provide technical assistance to the Environmental Protection Agency’s ‘Climate Leaders Program’. It’s an industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. We’re helping over 80 companies in the program to develop GHG inventories and complete reporting requirements. The whole program will prevent more than 50m metric tons of CO2 per year.
Energy reduction success for General Electric
Find out how we helped General Electric reduce costs, energy consumption and carbon footprint at one of their London offices.
Sustainable Municipality Project in Sweden
For the Swedish Energy Agency we have evaluated the 62 Swedish municipalities who are taking part in the ‘Sustainable Municipality Project’. These municipalities will report annually on their energy efficiency programmes. Our initial work has been to assess their plans and understand the commitments they are making. Our assessments help the Energy Agency report on the initiative to the Government.
Sweden’s energy efficiency action plan
For the Department of Enterprise, Energy & Communication, a senior member of the WSP team worked on secondment to help the Government write the Energy Efficiency Action Plan for Sweden. This ensured that Sweden met the requirements of the EU’s Energy Service Directive and it also provided the guidance on how to implement the directive in Sweden. This helps the Government develop their energy policies, analyses and evaluations, driving efficiencies across the country.
Feasibility investigations into use of renewable energy
WSP has been advising property company Michano AB on the feasibility of incorporating renewable energy solutions into their industrial properties. We have carried out desk top studies to investigate the appropriateness of different technology solutions, the environmental impacts and the economic benefits to produce renewable energy on site. Specifically our investigations have analysed the value and opportunities from sources such as solar panels, wind power, ground source heat pumps etc. Michano is interested in the potential to produce renewable energy locally to their developments.
Managing GHG emissions for software providers
WSP worked with a leading global software provider based in the US to quantify its GHG emissions and manage its annual preparations for the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). We have also assisted this client with a variety of other climate strategy initiatives including: the development of GHG performance objectives; the development of a carbon offsetting strategy; and the production of product specific carbon footprints.
Impact assessment for 620 MW bio power plant
We are conducting an EIA for the development of a new 620 MW boiler at a power plant in Kristiinan town in Finland. The new boiler will use wood, peat, coal, agro-biomass and possibly solid recovered fuel. We are assessing the technology and performance and will provide recommendations for fuel receiving and handling systems for wood, peat, recycled fuel, coal and storages.
Consultancy for ÅEA Wind park in Åland, Finland
We developed environmental and energy production recommendations for the planning of a 60 MW semi offshore wind park in Åland island. Once completed in 2011, Åland will reach a 70 % self sufficiency in terms of green electricity. On a windy day it will even be able to export electricity to the Nordic electricity market Nordpool.
Energy efficiency study for Ruukki metal manufacturing company
We are providing energy audit services to the leading Finnish metal manufacturer and technology company with operation sites in Sweden, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and Russia. We investigated energy consumption, related costs, CO2 emissions and potential for energy efficiency intensification. The recommendations will be incorporated in the local energy management action plan at Ruuki factories across Europe.
Energy and water audits for a bank
We conducted energy and water audits for Citi bank across 10 of their main offices in Europe, South Africa and the Middle East. This was supported by the provision of training for local staff at each of the offices to enable them to conduct future audits.
